Responses: Guidelines/protocols for amputee mx

Anna Frazer

Dear List,

Thank you to those who responded to my request for guidelines/protocols for the management of amputees. Responses ranged from text references to detailed information about commercial products. Flo-Tech provide management protocols (related to their prosthetic products) via their website, while Empower provide a specific management system for implementation in a variety of settings. I would highly recommend that you visit these websites (see
below) if you are looking for documentation of best practice for amputee management.
Full responses are listed below.
Regards,

Anna Frazer.

Dear List,
I am looking for information regarding guidelines or protocols for the clinical management of amputees. In particular, does anyone know of a system which is available (commercial or otherwise) which describes the process from pre-amputation to post-prosthetic fitting? I am looking for any system which indicates protocols and clinical benchmarks for the management of amputees in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
I will post responses. Thanks in advance!

I would like to introduce the Empower SMARTTM program as a commercial available program that complies with your inquiry.
The Empower SMARTTMprogram is a quality assured rehabilitation program for new amputee with a multi-disciplinary approach. The program describes best practice in clinical management of amputee including guidelines and protocols for the complete process from pre-operative considerations, throw amputation and immediate post-operative treatment, active therapy including wound care, compression therapy and physiotherapy, prosthetic provision and follow up. The phases include guidelines, technical and clinical manuals and video cuts, patient information booklet, standardized checklists and ref.
literature. The standardized checklists for patient documentation are synchronized throw the whole process and give the multidisciplinary team a possibility to verify and validate the outcome for each patient and measure the total treatment cost. It also gives the team a possibility to use the material for benchmarking the outcome with other clinics and by that identify possible improvemen!
ts and cost saving initiatives.
The program fulfils the demands in MDD 93/42 EEC as well as ISO 13485 and includes procedures about document control, handling storage of medical devices, risk assessment, and handling of complaints.
Please visit our website at www.empower-health.com for more information. At this site you are also able to down load a demo version of the Empower SMARTTMprogram.

Hello,

The Atlas of Limb Prosthetics, Surgical, Prosthetic and Rehabilitation Principles, AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ORTHOPEDIC SURGEONS, Second Edition, is the most definitave single published work addressing these issues that I know about. Another great resource is the JPO (Journal of Prosthetics and
Orthotics) accessable VIA the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists web site. Members of the Academy can access all current and previous issues. Non-members can access some issues. A goole search will get you the web site address.
