OPAF PSA: BOSTON-MIAMI WALK BY LANDMINE SURVIVOR

Jeffrey S. Reznick

The Orthotic and Prosthetic Assistance Fund (OPAF) offers the following information in cooperation with Adopt-A-Minefield
(http://www.landmines.org/) and the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (http://www.nyc.gov/html/mopd/) as a public service announcement (PSA) that helps to fulfill OPAF’s official representation of O&P in community and philanthropic circles.

OPAF aims primarily to enable individuals with physical disabilities — especially those served by members of the U.S. orthotics and prosthetics community — to enjoy the rewards of personal achievement, physical fitness, and social interaction. In achieving this goal, the Fund also seeks to help raise public awareness of the benefits that individuals with physical disabilities receive from physical activity, orthotics, and prosthetics. Complete information about OPAF is available at http://www.opfund.org.

The New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities would like to share some information about Julio Montoya, recognizing that OPAF may be able to offer him technical assistance. Mr. Montoya is a Peruvian landmine survivor who lost a leg and uses a prosthesis. Mr. Montoya is walking from Boston to Miami to raise awareness of people with disabilities. After arriving in New York last Wednesday, July 14, the Mayor’s Office directed Mr. Montoya to Bellevue Hospital where he received much-needed treatment for his prosthesis. There is a good chance that Mr. Montoya may experience additional injuries as he continues his walk south.

If you or someone you know would be willing to offer free technical assistance to Mr. Montoya during the course of his journey, please contact Mr. Montoya directly through his cell phone at: (240) 876-5490.
