Re: Partial hand and violin

Hi all-
I was asked an interesting question this evening. I have a friend who is a
Pediatrician and she and her husband have adopted an eight year old Korean girl
with a left partial hand due to a birth defect. This young lady pals around
with my eight year old daughter and thet ice skate and go to violin lessons
together. Chris is right handed but reverses the position of the instrument so she
can do the strings with her right hand while holding the bow with her left.
She tends to grip the bow with her thenar and hypothenar eminances, but does
occasionally lose control of it. She does have part of her second and fifth
phlanges, but doesn’t really use them when playing. She can oppose with them.
Mom, the Pediatrician, has already had the bow slightly modified and is
looking for other thoughts. I told her earlier this evening that I would post this
question to see what the list is able to do with all of our vast experience
and resources.
I will post the responses when they are gathered.
Thanks,
Josh Ryder, C.O.
