myoelectric for burn patients

Manny Dobrenz, CPO

I have a question for anyone with experience in myoelectrics with burn
patients. A patient aquaintance is having trouble with electrode contact. After
initial donning using a moisturizer or electolyte cream, the function is great.
The problem is that this patient does not have any pores and cannot sweat due
to excessive burn damage and grafting. The patient’s skin absorbs anything
put on it within minutes and completely dries out. Once this happens, the
electrodes have trouble picking up signals.

Otto bock had a few ideas, such as sealing off the socket, but nothing that
worked out. The skin still absorbs all moisture quickly regardless of what is
done . I have checked the socket fit, electrode location and skin contact,
which all seem to be very good. I have a few ideas but I want to know if anyone
out there has come across this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
