I’m currently consulting with a young man who has underwent a BKA, due to a
donor cycle incident. He is a fireman and ultimately wishes to return to
doing that. I feel he’ll be able to physically handle that job, but the
environments, fires in excess of 2200 degrees Fahrenheit, may/will create
issues with prosthetic reliability. I’d love to hear from someone with
experience in this area. This patient describes temperatures hot enough to
cause perspiration to steam inside his protective gear. I’m looking for
feedback from prosthetists and to maybe put my patient in contact with
another amputee firefighter.
