I have just returned (I live about 12 miles up the beach from the Trade
Winds Resort)from the Florida meeting. As most O&P meetings go, this was no
different. It leaned heavily on the “P” with a touch of “O”. The extra
charge workshop on contractures was the highlight for me. Having owned a
physical therapy office in NYC during the 80’s I know how tough this is to
treat.
I do understand the hard work by the Florida Association leaders to put this
meeting together, but next year, how about inviting a medical book seller
(maybe a free booth might convince them) or offering the opportunity to
submit poster exhibits or a contest for best FL member paper submitted and
then the winner presents at the meeting?
I am working on a poster exhibit myself for the AAOS on controling
rotational forces at the ankle by proper molding of casts at the thigh. It
seems to be an old art that has been lost by Surgeons and OrthoTechs alike.
Now that the Florida Board has ruled (in response to my letter and other
licensure application rulings as I read in the Board’s minutes) that
unlicensed OrthoTechs cannot apply fracture casts in Florida, Orthotists
need to know this technique to be able to replace, due to fecal matter and
urine stains, patient fracture casts in nursing homes.
