Robert Schiff

Hello all,
I am writing to invigorate the listserve to discuss all available techniques for ischial containment casting. My supervisor had recently posted an inquiry to which he got very little if any responses. I am a resident in prosthetics, and have some curiosities to fill concerning Ischial Containment. In our office, we hand cast all IC sockets and modify accordingly. It is not unusual to have 2 or 3 check socket on AKs to get a correctly fitting IC socket. I have classmates who I have talked to that will swear by the casting brim method and other that have used with the success the measurement only method.
My concerns, comments, and questions are as follows…What is everyone’s preferred style of cast and measure? If you prefer one over the other, WHY? What are the drawbacks to your style? What type of brims do you use for casting? How do you cast with a brim–(straps or a stand)? Why do you feel that your method works (i.e. better ischial containment, quicker, more cost efficient, etc.) ?
I am not trying to rock the boat with IC, but if there is a more efficient way, WITHOUT SACRIFICING QUALITY, then it is justifiable to explore them. However, these brims are not cheap, so I figured that I would do a little research on the topic.
I welcome and encourage all opinions, concerns, comments, criticisms. Thanks and all sources will be kept confidential.

Robbie
