The Secretary of the US Army awarded the Civilian Service Commendation Medal to Joseph A. Miller, PhD, CP, for commendable service in the development of O&P knowledge products. Miller has been part of the O&P profession for 41 years and is currently the senior advisor for clinical prosthetics and orthotics for the Defense Health Agency, Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE), responsible for strategic guidance of O&P-related policy and regulations for the Department of Defense. He served as the chief of the Prosthetic and Orthotic Service for the Integrated Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center and continues to serve on several federal agency workgroups for the provision, evaluation, and coding of products.
“Dr. Miller’s astute knowledge and teamwork support patient care, research, and clinical informatics, give army medicine relevant guides and recommendations, and inform planning for the next conflict. Dr. Miller’s accomplishments reflect well on the extremity trauma and amputation center of excellence, the office of the surgeon general, the US army medical command, and the department of the army,” the award said.
Miller served 13 years as a captain in the United States Army Reserve, Medical Services Corps. During his deployment to Iraq, he was awarded the Joint Services Commendation Medal.
He is a graduate of the US Army Academy of Health Sciences Ft. Sam Houston and Incarnate Word College. He holds a bachelor of science degree in O&P, a master of science in health promotion and education, and a doctorate in health science research/administration.
