Articulate Labs, the Keller Army Community Hospital (KACH), and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine have been awarded a $1.3 million grant to evaluate an orthotic device in an effort to accelerate military servicemembers’ return to active duty following reconstructive surgery of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The award will provide non-dilutive funding for a study evaluating the use of Articulate Labs’ KneeStim orthotic devices at KACH. Led by Shawn Gee, MD, an active-duty orthopedic surgeon, the study will recruit 60 patients undergoing ACL reconstructive surgery to wear KneeStim devices during rehabilitation and daily activities and will begin in February 2024.
Herbie Kirn developed the technology following a motorcycle accident that led to his transtibial amputation as a way to integrate physical medicine into daily life when time constraints and distance prevented access to physical therapy
