You might be surprised to learn that not everyone in the United States uses an air conditioner to find relief from hot weather. According to the Energy Information Administration, roughly 12 percent of the population doesn’t use or have ACs. We asked our followers what’s the best way to kept houses cool. Of those who responded, 85 percent said they use the AC; 9 percent said they kept their blinds closed; 6 percent used ceiling fans, and no one taking our poll used a swamp cooler to keep the house cool. One of our followers provided a link to a website that gave a state-by-state breakdown of how many households don’t have or use air conditioners. She added, “That’s a good example of why the state-by-state information is significant. My son, who is a high school math teacher, especially enjoys teaching statistics. He will be proud of me for adding the information I did.”
Of those who responded to our poll question on the best thing about flying, 42 percent said napping was their favorite; 32 percent said they love reading; 26 percent said flying saves time. No one said the snacks were their favorite thing, which is kind of understandable. If you’re like this writer, you’ll skip the snacks for a combination of reading a good book and napping.
One of our followers who lives in the Sunshine State didn’t need to fly to attend the National Assembly. “Not us!” they wrote. “We’re lucky enough to be relatively local!” And then they added a palm tree and two smiling emojis.
This week, now that most everyone has returned home (safely, we hope) from AOPA, we’d thought we’d follow up on last week’s question. This week’s we asked, save for flight delays, what are the cons of airline travel. So far, cramped quarters on the plane is getting the top vote. Tell us what you think. We’d love to hear from you.
