Something’s missing in the prosthetics profession. For decades, almost every healthcare discipline has boasted an awards program. Top Docs, Top Dentists, and Top Eye Doctors are common. Dog-eared and worn, you’ll find these popular magazine products in waiting rooms, lobbies, and coffee tables across the country. Readers love them: They’re terrific resources for finding a healthcare professional. Providers love them: There’s no better way to get in front of patients searching for a clinician.
For prosthetics providers though, there hasn’t been a magazine that publishes a Top Docs‑type of award. Several years ago the team at Amplitude magazine began asking: What if prosthetics caregivers join the rest of the healthcare industry with an awards program? The feedback was unanimous. We heard “It’s about time!” over and over. Starting in 2025, Amplitude is filling the void.
Many magazines contract with a research companies that rely on peer opinion to designate award winners. While peer opinion is important, that type of selection process excludes the most significant component of the healthcare community: the patient. A quick Google search and scan of patient forums makes it obvious that awards chosen only by peer opinion are viewed with some skepticism from patient populations. Patients want to know what other patients think of clinicians. When Amplitude set out to establish an awards program for prosthetics providers, including both client and peer opinions was a top priority. Titled “Reader’s Choice Awards,” the voting process allows both prosthetics professionals and amputee community readers to weigh in and cast a vote.
There are obvious benefits to winning, but there are also silver linings to participating that many professionals might not realize. Here are a few of the ways an awards program can help both clinicians and facilities thrive:
Patient Recruitment. The most prevalent benefit of winning an award or placing a promotion in the Reader’s Choice Awards is exposure. Awards programs establish credibility and build brand awareness. Additionally, magazine award issues are considered durable. They are issues that patients refer back to far longer than the single month of publication.
Employee Recruitment. Employees are attracted to clinics and facilities with a great reputation. Being seen in an awards section is a highly effective tool for attracting the attention of potential employees and recruiting top talent.
Employee Retention. Winning is direct validation of an employee’s hard work. Awards boost employee morale and increase motivation. Companies that are recognized as excellent typically foster a positive work environment. Who doesn’t want to play for a winning team?
Brand Awareness. Standing out in a crowded field is one of many keys to business success. Being known as an expert ensures brand loyalty and drives business growth.
The most humble in the profession might cringe at award programs, considering them egotistical or a public display of self-importance. “This is a narrow view of these programs,” says Kayla Gentry, project manager for Amplitude’s Reader’s Choice Awards. “In additional to recognizing excellence and innovation in the profession, award programs offer a multitude of benefits for both the patient community and clinicians. Awards achieve a myriad of marketing goals with a single, cost-effect product. It’s like the swiss army knife of business promotion.”
