The developer of a prosthetic hand that is completely controlled and powered by body motion received an £800,000 ($1,058,240) investment from SIS Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, Worth Capital, Oxford Technology, the University of Strathclyde, and Gabriel Investment Syndicate. The device has five-finger motion, variable grips, and wrist positions without using electronics.
The business, Metacarpal, headquartered in Scotland, aims to enhance the acceptance rate of upper-limb prostheses by covering a gap in the market for body-powered devices. It was founded by University of Strathclyde product design engineering graduate Fergal Mackie in 2020. The investment should help the company finalize the product, begin manufacturing, and double its headcount to eight.
