A Canadian startup is using artificial intelligence–backed hardware to allow a prosthetic arm to “see” objects and adjust its grip automatically. Canada-based smartARM aims to improve the learning curve required for users of upper-limb prostheses to perform basic daily movements.
Rather than requiring users to rely on surface electromyography sensors for muscle signals, smartARM is pairing Meta AI smart glasses’ hardware and open-source models with its prototype to capture real-world visual data from the user’s point of view. Using open-source software and commercially accessible wearable hardware is designed to lower manufacturing costs while maintaining high performance, the company said.
