In 2004, when electronic health records (EHRs) were first introduced and faced implementation challenges, the Department of Health and Human Services created the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, which outlined a plan to ensure that most Americans had EHRs by 2014. The authors suggest a similar plan for AI tools.
A proposed bill, the Health Tech Investment Act, would create a Medicare payment system for AI-enabled devices, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working to gain deeper understanding of real-world implementation and functionality of AI in healthcare.
