Ron Cheney, CPO, president of American Prosthetics & Orthotics, Iowa, recently passed away. He was 84. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Cheney devoted his life to advancing the O&P field and improving the lives of countless patients.
Cheney completed his education at Northwestern University and New York University and began his career in 1958 at Winkley Artificial Limb Company. He co-purchased the spin-off American Prosthetics in 1972. His acquisition of the company in 1988 led to its growth and expansion, establishing eight locations in Iowa and one in Illinois. Under his leadership, the company was renamed American Prosthetics & Orthotics in the 1990s to reflect its comprehensive services.
Beyond his professional contributions, Cheney also generously supported the Iowa Amputee Golf Association, Iowa Prosthetics and Orthotics Association, and On With Life.
“Ron’s passing is a significant loss to the profession and to all those whose lives he touched. He will be remembered not only as a successful business leader but as a compassionate professional driven by a purpose to improve others’ lives. His influence on the prosthetics and orthotics community and his company will endure for generations to come,” said his son, Rod Cheney, CPO.
