On March 19, Glenn Crumpton, LPO, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Orthotics and Prosthetics (NAAOP) sent a letter to all state governors, COVID-19 State Task Forces, and health insurance commissioners stating that O&P patients must have access to continued care during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. NAAOP said that because O&P services are essential health benefits as defined by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), they should be treated by federal, state, and local governments as necessary healthcare services, and O&P providers should remain accessible to provide care to patients in need. To reduce the risk of infection, NAAOP called for federal, state, and local governments to issue further guidance and safety protocols to minimize transmission of the virus during patient care encounters.
