The landmark Orthotics & Prosthetics Program at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) opened a new facility at the Aliso Viejo, California, headquarters of Ossur North America August 16. "This public/private partnership took us off the chopping block and into an incredible new space," said Scott Hornbeak, CPO, FAAOP, O&P program coordinator. "Cal State Dominguez Hills made the commitment to approve the curriculum, hire new faculty and staff, and provide support through the [CSUDH] Division of Extended Education and the School of Health." Without Ossur's support, the program would have been forced to close its doors after 20 years of success due to federal funding cutbacks, it was noted.Hornbeak estimates the value of the facility and equipment donated by Ossur at $750,000. In addition to housing the 5,900-square-foot instructional facility on Ossur's Aliso Viejo campus, the company customized it and stocked it with hundreds of thousands of dollars in donated equipment and contributions toward overhead costs. The additional space will allow the program to accommodate more than twice as many bachelors-degree and post-baccalaureate-certificate students as previously. "Cal State Dominguez Hills is responsible for producing approximately 15 percent of our country's prosthetics professionals each year," said Gary Wertz, president of Ossur North America. "Now, this important program will continue to benefit the entire industry and, most importantly, the amputees who rely on them."The program is one of seven schools currently accredited by the National Commission on Orthotic Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) in cooperation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The prosthetics program is launching this fall, and orthotics education will recommence next year. The program will offer a "3+1" model for undergraduate students through the CSUDH School of Health, which will entail three years of prerequisite and general education courses on the Carson campus followed by a year of prosthetics-specific curriculum in Aliso Viejo. In addition, there will be a post-baccalaureate certificate program through Extended Education.Ossur will also provide lectures and samples on an "as-needed basis," according to Hornbeak. The program was designed with the idea of academic freedom, meaning Ossur's competitors' products will be also used within the courses as well.
