Paddy Rossbach, RN, president/CEO of the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA), was recently invited as a ACA consultant to present a symposium for the Landmine Survivors Network (LSN) in El Salvador. The symposium, which was held in conjunction with the El Salvador Ministry of Health (MOH) and Social Security Institute (SSI), was attended by approximately 75 healthcare providers from the government and private sector hospitals in and around the capital, San Salvador. MOH and SSI personnel, survivors, and LSN staff attended the two-day event, which addressed the care needs of individuals undergoing an amputation. Rossbach addressed the emotional needs and pre-and post-operative care the first day and taught some basic interventions such as wrapping, gait training, and inexpensive effective methods of rehabilitation the second day, using the survivors themselves as "models." It is anticipated that LSN will follow this very successful program with another to train the attendees as trainers themselves so that the information learned can be disseminated to other healthcare professionals in their communities, ACA said
