Arimed Team Provides Pedorthic Care to Olympic Athletes

Photo by Greg Mango Athletes suffering from foot and ankle pain during the 2004 Athens Olympics will find relief this summer, thanks to volunteers on a healthcare team headed by Steven Mirones, CO, CPed, president of Arimed, a 55-year-old, family-owned orthotics, prosthetics, and pedorthics firm based in Brooklyn, New York.

Arimed's team will provide athletes with pedorthic services, including foot orthotics and footwear modifications, which have been found to help athletes prevent and recover from injuries.

"This is the first time pedorthics will be available at the Olympics," Mirones said. "We're delighted to be able to volunteer in this capacity because we know we're going to have a positive effect on the athletes, and we'll create a positive awareness of pedorthics."

The Olympic Medical Services Team added pedorthics this year because officials found during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney that 1,700 of the 10,651 athletes competing were seen by foot and ankle physicians, Mirones said. Of those, 532 athletes needed the orthopedic intervention in their footwear. Mirones' brother and associate, Matthew Mirones, a 30-year healthcare veteran, helped make arrangements for pedorthists to join the Olympic Medical Services Team.

"My team will work with orthopedists and podiatrists as part of the Olympic Medical Services Team to design, manufacture, and fit orthotic devices on-site," Mirones said.

Mirones and his colleague, Jessica Sanchez, CPed, also of Arimed, will set up a temporary pedorthic laboratory on August 11 before the Olympics begin on August 13, and the team will provide hands-on technical care, including custom foot orthotics and footwear modifications, until the conclusion of the Olympics on August 29. To build his team, Mirones recruited eight additional pedorthists from Canada and the United States by calling for volunteers last year in the professional publication Current Pedorthics Journal.

Wayne,Indiana Louis Winskowski, CPed, Foot Support, St. Cloud, Minnesota Arimed has a history of helping individuals worldwide who have lost an extremity and most recently donated C-Legs to Paul Esposito, who lost his legs in the October 15, 2003, Staten Island Ferry crash. The firm also has donated prosthetic legs to Edgar Rivera, whose legs were severed after being shoved in front of a New York uptown No. 6 train in 1999; donated artificial limbs to victims mutilated in the civil war in Sierra Leone; and provided both prosthetic and orthotic services to destitute children in Ahmedebad, India.
