Ossur Launches Bionics-Focused Web Site

Ossur, Aliso Viejo, California, has launched a new web site dedicated to the present and future of bionics, as well as the significant role played by its Bionic Technology platform, at www.ossur.com/bionics

Ossur said its artificial limbs have been the recipients of numerous awards and accolades in recent years, and the company's technological advances are escalating rapidly as are its offerings based on its Bionic Technology platform. In just one year since it became available, hundreds of amputees are now wearing Ossur's award-winning RHEO KNEE TM , which combines artificial intelligence with microprocessor technology. Ossur's POWER KNEE TM is widely considered the most advanced lower-limb prosthetic technology available today, and is currently in limited release. Finally, there is much anticipation over the soon-to-be-launched PROPRIO FOOT TM , the third in Ossur's Bionic Technology family of products.

The company said its new web site features technology as cutting-edge as the innovations in bionics and artificial intelligence that it showcases. Just as Ossur's bionic prostheses are a seamless fusion of electronics, mechanics and human physiology, the site is an integration of informative content and interactive functions.

"The Bionics website literally speaks to the user in an interactive and thought-provoking environment," says Thora Ágústsdóttir, Ossur's web master. Visitors to the site can hear what drives the creative minds behind the products such as scientists Hugh Herr, Ph.D., director of the Biomechatronics department at MIT's Media Lab and co-inventor of the RHEO KNEE; Stéphane Bédard, co-developer of the POWER KNEE; and of course, Hilmar B. Janusson, Ossur's vice president of Research and Development, a physicist whose in-house team has introduced more innovations in prosthetic devices than any other company in the world.

Professionals and technology buffs will find explanations on the integration of artificial intelligence and power motion as well as insight into the future of prosthetics with sneak-peeks into osseointegration and neurosensing. The layperson will gain a greater appreciation of the complexities and excitement behind the creation of these new offerings. "Now, more than ever, amputees' activities are limited more by their will and aspirations, and not by the performance of their prosthesis, as had been the case with older designs," says Hilmar Janusson.
