BOC to Offer Online COF, CMF Courses

The Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC) is partnering with Kassel Group Inc., Adrian, Michigan, and TrulifeHealthcare, based in Dublin, Ireland, with US executive and marketing offices in Atlanta, Georgia, to offer online courses for the Certified Orthotic (COF) and Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) programs.

The online course offerings represent "BOC's continuing effort to make certification more accessible and less expensive for the fitter candidate," according to Trisha Tatam BOC director of communications. Costs for the online fitter courses are significantly reduced compared to attending the in-person, one-week courses currently offered, she noted. "Reducing costs to candidates and increasing access to exams has been a primary goal of BOC since it introduced the COF and CMF in 2000," she continued. "Additionally, BOC was the first in the profession to offer computer-based exams and on-line practice exams in 2003, making the certification process much less expensive and time-consuming."

O&P education sponsors, Kassel Group Inc. and TrulifeHealthcare have become BOC Approved CPE Course Providers, Tatam said. The new online approved courses fulfill the fitter school prerequisite for the COF and CMF ertification program, ensuring that candidates have access to the required education and training before being accepted r the exams. Additional clinical practice prerequisites are required.

According to BOC, these COF comprehensive courses train individuals to fit prefabricated orthotic devices, including spine, cervical, upper and lower extremities and compression devices within the COF Scope of Practice. The COF candidate should be prepared to dedicate at least 48 hours to the process of completing the course. The CMF online course requires approximately eight hours, covering the essentials of proper measuring, fitting and evaluation of mastectomy bras and breast prosthesis, in addition to other skills in the CMF Scope of Practice. The courses are designed for entry-level personnel, experienced practitioners seeking a refresher course, and/or to fulfill Continuing Professional Education hours.

The online courses will be launched in 2007-8, Tatam said. Course information will be available shortly.
