Mirones Honored for Prosthetic Donations

New Direction Services Inc., of Staten Island, New York, recently honored Steven Mirones, CO, CPed, president of Arimed, based in Brooklyn, New York, for his contributions to the community including donating artificial limbs to victims mutilated in the civil war in Sierra Leone, Africa.

"We're honoring Steven for his dedication and commitment to the Staten Island community," said New Direction Services executive director Wendy De Shong-Neuhalfen, who also recognized other community leaders at the luncheon held February 11, 2007. "I first became familiar with Steven's work more than six years ago because of the help he gave the victims from Sierra Leone who settled in Staten Island. It's a great human being who makes a commitment to give so much to others. Most people don't do that."

New Direction Services is a nonprofit organization that serves the residents of Staten Island by providing a food pantry and nutrition education, wellness program, referrals to needed services, cooking classes, reading and literacy, and cultural awareness.

Muktar Jalloh and Tommy Foday, two of the Sierra Leone victims who received prostheses from Arimed after arriving in the United States in 2000, attended the New Direction Services awards luncheon to help honor Mirones. Jalloh, now in his late 20s, graduated from Wagner College on Staten Island with a degree in Social Work and is working at Coney Island Hospital. Foday, now in his late 40s, is married and employed at a printing company. Six of the 12 Sierra Leone victims treated by Arimed were children who remained in the United States to attend school.

"The ability to change a person's life and give them hope after an unimaginable loss is a source of great satisfaction," Mirones said. "Arimed and New Directions have like goals in that we are working toward improving our community and, more importantly, the human condition."

Mirones' firm also donated Otto Bock C-Legs® to Paul Esposito, who lost his legs in the October 2003 Staten Island Ferry crash; donated prosthetic legs to Edgar Rivera, whose legs were severed after being shoved in front of an uptown No. 6 train in 1999; and provided both prosthetic and orthotics services to destitute children in Ahmedebad, India, and most recently, in January 2007, to patients in Haiti.

In October 2005, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and his Advisory Committee on Disability Issues honored Arimed, with a Business Advocacy Award for its generosity in donating prostheses to victims of violence, accidents, and war.

Besides his work with individuals with disabilities, during the 2004 Athens Olympics Mirones headed a medical team to treat athletes suffering from foot and ankle pain by providing them with hands-on technical care including foot orthotics and orthopedic devices.

Arimed was founded in 1949 by Aristotle Mirones, the father of Steven and his brother Matthew Mirones, CPO, who also is involved with the firm.
