Film Starring Amy Purdy on DVD

What's Bugging Seth , an independent film drama by Man of Steel Productions that stars Amy Purdy, a bilateral transtibial amputee from Las Vegas, Nevada, is now available on DVD. Purdy, a Freedom Innovations Amputee Advocate, plays the female lead, a rare occurrence for amputees in Hollywood.

Purdy was led to the project by her prosthetist, who received the nationwide casting call from The O&P EDGE . Purdy was the first to respond. "They were looking for a female, below-knee amputee in her early 20s with red hair and a vintage style," Purdy said on the film's website ( www.whatsbuggingseth.com ). "I knew this was my chance."

The film, originally released in 2005, won first place at the Fargo Film Festival and will make its West Coast premiere in April 2008 at the Newport Film Festival in Newport Beach, California. Purdy will be attending the premiere to answer questions after the screening.

Purdy's biography on the Adaptive Action Sports (AAS) website ( www.adaptiveactionsports.com ) reads, in part:

At age 19, Amy's lifetook an alternate path. After experiencing flu-like symptoms for about 24 hours, she was rushed to the hospital in a state of septic shock. En route to the hospital, Amy experienced respiratory and multiple organ failure. These factors, combined with a blood condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), in which the blood becomes extremely thin and creates microscopic blood clots, caused Amy to lose circulation to her feet, hands, nose, ears, and kidneys, and caused her lungs and adrenal glands to hemorrhage. Miraculously, her heart and brain were unaffected. After 32 blood transfusions and removal of her ruptured spleen, doctors diagnosed Amy with bacterial meningitis.

Following this, Amy was in a coma for more than three weeks, and doctors gave her less than a 2 percent chance of survival. Due to the lack of circulation she had suffered at the beginning of her ordeal, doctors had to amputate her legs below the knee&. Almost two years later Amy participated in Nevada's first "Laproscopic" kidney transplant surgery, receiving a kidney from her father. She was the first person in Las Vegas in more than 20 years to contract Neisseria meningitis and survive.

In the film, which focuses on the issues of insecurity and independence, Purdy stirred her own memories of the months following her amputations. "My character didn't feel whole without her legs and required a cosmetic finish to make her prostheses 'pretty,'" Purdy said on the film's site. "Today, I am more comfortable wearing skirts that actually show off my unfinished legs. I have no desire to hide them."
