ACA Names New Medical Director

Terrence Sheehan, MD Terrence Sheehan, MD, chief medical officer at the Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland, Rockville, has been appointed medical director for the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA).

According to the ACA, Sheehan will chair the association's Medical Advisory Committee, a 13-member group that consists of the nation's top limb-loss care specialists. The committee works to set standards of care for persons with limb loss and limb difference and to educate healthcare professionals on issues concerning these individuals. Sheehan has been a member of the committee since 2003.

"Dr. Sheehan is one of our staunchest supporters and has contributed to the Amputee Coalition in many ways," said Paddy Rossbach, RN, president and CEO of the ACA. "I am pleased to announce his appointment as medical director."

In 2006, Sheehan led a collaborative effort between the ACA and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) to establish the first-ever national standards of care for addressing the needs of individuals with limb loss, the ACA said. The standards, which became effective in January 2008, require amputation programs to provide a holistic, interdisciplinary team approach to care and to offer post-care assistance in transitioning back to the community.

"Standards help to eliminate gaps in the care process, but there is still a lot we can be doing to improve the quality of lives for individuals post limb loss," Sheehan said. "As medical director, I look forward to continuing to work with the many talented members of the Amputee Coalition and the Medical Advisory Committee in addressing this issue."

Sheehan is board certified by the American Board of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is the director of the Comprehensive Amputee Program at the Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland. Sheehan has also been working with Physicians for Peace on projects to bring contemporary care for those with limb loss through education of healthcare professionals in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
