Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital, Buckinghamshire, England, is named for the Beatrix Potter hedgehog, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and is the subject of a number of books, including veterinarian Les Stockers’ Something in a Cardboard Box: Tales from a Wild Life Hospital. One cardboard box that arrived at the hospital in July contained a foundling baby goose with a broken leg. Though the two-week-old gosling had a low chance of survival with her injury, the hospital staff dubbed the goose “Betty,” repaired her leg, and created for her a leg brace made of steel pins and bolts.
According to the Telegraph newspaper, Betty is now up and walking-or waddling, as the case may be-and Tiggywinkles staff hope to return her to the wild by the middle of August.
