Randall Alley, CP, LP, FAAOP, and his patient, Telisa Boston, were guests on the syndicated television program, The Doctors on March 11. Alley discussed the i-LIMB™ Hand by Touch Bionics, Livingston, Scotland, and how it helped Boston in the segment, “Futuristic Medicine That Can Change Your Life.”
Alley is CEO and chief prosthetist for biodesigns, Santa Monica, California, and is an accredited i-LIMB practitioner and a Touch Bionics Development Partner for both its i-LIMB hand and ProDigits™ technology.
Boston, who lost her right arm at age 16 to a rare tumor, was fit with the i-LIMB in 2008. She previously wore a passive prosthesis and needed a more functional solution to better handle her duties as a highly visible sales professional. Alley has specialized in upper-limb prosthetic care for nearly 20 years and believed the i-LIMB and his own interface design would enable her to accomplish her goals at work and encourage her to more actively use her right arm.
With the i-LIMB, Boston said that since she began using the i-LIMB, she has gained dexterity and has more capacity to grasp objects, type, carry products at trade shows, and create presentations. She also has improved her ability to communicate and interact with associates using hand gestures and has improved her work performance.
“Randy’s expert knowledge of upper-extremity prosthetics has truly been useful in that he has helped me to fully realize the magnitude of things I can do again with this bionic hand,” Boston said. “None of the other prosthetists I have worked with specialized in upper-extremity prosthetics. Most work on lower extremities and help upper-extremity amputees from time to time. Randy is the expert on arm prosthetics, and it truly makes a difference.”
