The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC) announced the appointment of John M. “Mo” Kenney, CPO, FAAOP, as president of its 2011 board of directors. Other executive committee members elected for the 2010-2011 term include Donald D. Virostek, CPO, president elect; Timothy E. Miller, CPO, secretary treasurer; and Deane Doty, Jr., CPO, immediate past president. Robert S. Lin, CPO, FAAOP, will fulfill his term on the ABC board as a director; Dennis J. Janisse, CPed, was elected to an additional term as a director; and James H. Wynne, CPO, FAAOP, will serve his first year on the ABC board as a director.
Kenney, a right transtibial amputee, has served on the ABC board since 2003 and helped to establish many of ABC’s current policies. He brings with him nearly 17 years experience in the O&P profession. He owns and operates Kenney Orthopedics, which has three locations in Kentucky and one in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has also been involved in several humanitarian ventures, including trips to the Ukraine, Jamaica, and Mexico. Kenney is a graduate of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and the orthotic and prosthetic training program at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois.
“My job is to make sure our credentials are protected and our high standards are maintained,” Kenney said. “I look forward to working with ABC in overcoming the challenges and accomplishing the goals that will give way to positive advancements in the O&P profession.”
Virostek has served on ABC’s board for the past four years. He was elected secretary treasurer for the remainder of the 2010 term after the passing of Todd F. Anderson, CP, FAAOP. Virostek has volunteered as an ABC examiner and has written and developed practitioner-credentialing exams for the past 12 years. He is currently the director of orthotics for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Dallas, Texas.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the ABC board and look forward to working with all of the other dedicated board members and staff to advance the mission of ABC,” Virostek said.
Miller has close to 30 years of experience in O&P and is the owner of Miller-Meier Limb and Brace, Bettendorf, Iowa. He has served as an ABC orthotic, prosthetic, and technician examiner; exam team member; and chair of numerous ABC exam and certification committees. He has authored components of the written and written simulation exams.
Doty first joined the ABC board in 2005 and has served the organization as an examiner, site coordinator, candidate liaison, and clinical patient management (CPM) exam chairman. He has 30 years experience in O&P, currently serving as president and clinical specialist of Active Life, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“Looking forward into 2011, I see an ABC focused upon its mission, vision, and strategies,” Doty said. “Our reestablishment of our certified assistant credential, expansion of our certified technician examination, and continued support of the profession’s move to a master’s degree keeps ABC in a strong position to advance the O&P profession.”
Lin has contributed many years to ABC as both a volunteer and committee member. He began his service with ABC as an orthotic examiner and has chaired several ABC exam committees and served as commissioner for the National Commission for Orthotic & Prosthetic Education (NCOPE). Lin is currently the chief pediatric orthotist/prosthetist for Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. He is also a faculty member and program director for Newington Certificate Program in Orthotics and Prosthetics, Connecticut.
Janisse has served on the ABC board of directors since 2007. He is the president and CEO of National Pedorthic Services (NPS) Inc., headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also a clinical assistant professor for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and the director of pedorthic education for P.W. Minor & Son, Batavia, New York. He also teaches at Northwestern University Medical School and has written extensively on all aspects of pedorthics.
Wynne received his orthotic and prosthetic education from Northwestern University and was certified by ABC in 1991. Since then, he has served on the ABC facility accreditation committee and has been instrumental in providing continuing education for O&P. Wynne is the vice president, director of education, and resident director for Boston Brace, Avon, Massachusetts, and the National Orthotic Prosthetic Company (NOPCO), the clinical division of Boston Brace.
