The Amputee Coalition launched its annual Limb Loss Awareness Month campaign in New York City’s Times Square with a giant message streaming across the Spectracolor Clear Channel digital billboard every 15 minutes during April urging consumers to take action and prevent suffering an avoidable amputation. More than one million people are expected to see the Amputee Coalition’s “Take a Seat, Check Your Feet” message that amputations can be prevented if those at risk take action and check their feet regularly.
“We are very excited to have this significant opportunity to get the word out about limb loss awareness,” said Kendra Calhoun, president and CEO of the Amputee Coalition. “Many people are unaware of the causes of amputation and often see limb loss in just a few categories: the wounded warrior or the accomplished athlete. The fact is that limb loss affects every generation from young to old and people from all walks of life.”
The Amputee Coalition is sponsoring this month-long campaign, which will also show people of all ages and from all walks of life with limb loss thriving and inspiring others to take action, through a public-education grant from sock manufacturer THOR-LO, Statesville, North Carolina.
“Sponsoring the Amputee Coalition’s efforts is part of our ongoing endeavor to help people whose feet are at risk,” said James Throneburg, founder and CEO of THOR-LO. “We strongly support the Coalition’s mission of limb loss prevention.”
The billboard is part of a nationwide campaign. Throughout the country, amputee support groups, veterans, prosthetists, rehabilitation centers, and those with limb loss will be taking action in their communities to raise awareness and help prevent amputations.
