Melissa Stockwell, CP, has received the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award from the Women’s Sports Foundation, which was presented at an October ceremony in New York, New York. Stockwell is the first female American soldier to lose a limb in the Iraq war; she lost her left leg due to a roadside bomb. She is a 2008 Paralympian in swimming, and in September, she took home silver at the World Triathlon Grand Final London, England, in the Paratriathlon Female Tri-2 division.
The award is given to a female athlete who “exhibits extraordinary courage in her athletic performance, demonstrates the ability to overcome adversity, makes significant contributions to sports, and serves as an inspiration and role model,” according to the award’s website.
