The New Jersey Senate passed legislation aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents by mandating insurance coverage for athletic O&P devices. The legislation (S-1439) was sponsored by Senator Troy Singleton and passed unanimously.
“Sports provide physical, mental, and social benefits, and are incredibly impactful on the lives of children and adults alike,” said Singleton. “Sadly, individuals with prosthetics often lead more sedentary lives or risk injury when using improper devices because of the high cost of a second prosthetic, which are not covered by insurance. This legislation will expand the horizons for residents with physical disabilities throughout the state, and most especially for kids who simply want to play.”
The bill mandates that health insurance plans provide coverage for an additional orthotic or prosthetic device if deemed necessary by a physician to facilitate participation in sports and recreational activities. The legislation, similar to others being introduced across the county, is intended to bridge a significant gap in care and support for over two million individuals living with limb loss in the United States, as well as others dealing with limb differences and mobility impairments.
