Ohio Willow Wood has expanded the applications of its elevated vacuum suspension system, LimbLogicâ„¢ VS. Prosthetists may advise patients that waterproof vacuum suspension is now a reality with LimbLogic VS. Additionally, prosthetists preferring thermoplastic sockets may use a new adapter, which permits LimbLogic VS to be used with thermoplastic sockets.
New Environments
LimbLogic VS has been water resistant since its release in 2007. Now wearers can use the system in wet environments and even immerse in fresh water without worry. LimbLogic VS is the only waterproof elevated vacuum suspension system available for use in the prosthetic market.
For Filip Carroll, a transtibial amputee, the new waterproof feature aids him professionally. In addition to working in the medical field, Filip is an active lifeguard instructor. Being able to wear his LimbLogic VS prosthesis without concern while at the pool allows him to remain focused on his students.
“While instructing, I transition from poolside to in the water constantly. I don’t have to think or worry about getting my limb wet or not,” shares Filip. “Having the reliability of the vacuum suspension and it being waterproof, I can confidently demonstrate techniques and thoroughly instruct my students safely.”
LimbLogic VS underwent an improvement to its sealing system and was thoroughly tested to meet standards set by the International Electrotechnical Commission. LimbLogic VS passed the commission testing earning an impressive IPX8 rating. LimbLogic VS may be completely immersed in fresh water and continue to provide reliable vacuum suspension.
Although the LimbLogic VS components that are installed in the prosthesis are waterproof, users must keep in mind that the hand-held remote-control unit is not waterproof and should never be exposed to water.
New Applications
LimbLogic VS’s usage has not only been expanded in regards to environmental elements, but also in socket applications. Ohio Willow Wood recently developed, tested, and released a Thermoplastic Drop-In Adapter. The new adapter maintains an airtight seal with LimbLogic VS and permits the system to now be used with thermoplastic sockets. For added comfort the Thermoplastic Drop-In Adapter allows for a custom distal cup to be fabricated that replicates the user’s correct anatomical shape.
The average build height of the adapter is .6250 in. with a custom distal end. The adapter is suitable for patients with an adjusted body weight of 250 lb. (115kg) for U.S. activity levels 2 and 3. A reusable thermoplastic adapter tooling kit is available and sold separately.
