In a U.S. News and World Report Health Care article published online July 5, contributor Jacob F. Schulz, MD, an attending physician, Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore Health System, Bronx, New York, discussed the value of universal scoliosis screening. Schulz, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal deformity, writes that while the standard forward bending test used in school scoliosis screening is mostly effective in identifying scoliosis, it can lead to false positives and also miss some serious cases.
