At 19 years old, Kevin Matthews was living at home and attending college when he says he had the urge to expand his horizons. Knowing that the Army could offer him career training and a change of scenery, he says he decided to enlist. It was 1981, when computers were the craze, and he wanted to pursue a computer programmer/repair occupational specialty. The computer course, however, was full. The recruiter offered the 42C, Orthotic Specialist job description, and before Matthews was halfway through reading it, he says he was sold.
