Ossur PROPRIO FOOT Wins Popular Science Award

Ossur has been awarded Popular Science magazine's "Best of What's New in Personal Health" Award for the second consecutive yearthis year for the PROPRIO FOOT TM .

In 2005, Ossur, based in Reykjavik, Iceland, with North American headquarters in Aliso Viejo, California, won with its POWER KNEE TM . Both are part of Ossur's new Bionics Technology platform and family of products.

Bionic Technology combines three synergistic technologies that promote advanced and more natural locomotion: sensor technology, artificial intelligence, and actuator technology, Ossur explained. "The advanced sensors detect key metrics such as changes in load and angle, and also determine the type and angle of surface being navigated. This data is fed to the artificial intelligence software, which determines the precise motion needed for the next step in the gait. The three-step processsensing, thinking, and actingemployed by devices built on the Bionic Technology platform results in motion that is smoother, more natural, and safer for the user."

Each year, Popular Science reviews thousands of new products and innovations and chooses only 100 winners for ten different categories. Among the judging criteria are: the significance of the innovation; the quality of the design and the finished product; the originality of thought; and the ambition and scope of the project. The winners the "Best of What's New" are awarded inclusion in the much-anticipated December issue of Popular Science, the most widely read issue of the year since the debut of "Best of What's New" in 1987. The 2006 issue is on sale November 14.

"'Best of What's New' is the ultimate Popular Science accolade, representing a year's worth of work evaluating thousands of products," said Editor Mark Jannot. "These awards honor innovations that not only influence the way we live today, but that also change the way we think about the future."

"We are proud that the PROPRIO FOOT was developed entirely in-house by Ossur's industry-leading R&D department," said Ossur President Eythor Bender. "It's a seamless fusion of electronics, mechanics, and human physiology that reduces the energy that patients spend in reacting consciously to the environment." Expertise in real-time motion analysis for the foot was provided by Dynastream Innovations Inc., Cochrane, Alberta, Canada.

Prosthetists and users alike have been generous in their praise of the PROPRIO FOOT. The Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are both actively using the prosthesis to benefit servicemen injured in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as veterans from past conflicts, Ossur said.
