The American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists (the Academy) awarded Randall Alley, CP, FAAOP, with its Clinical Creativity Award at its annual meeting and scientific symposium, held in Chicago in February. Alley is the CEO and chief prosthetist for biodesigns, Santa Monica, California. The Clinical Creativity Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate high levels of creativity in process or device development that improve orthotic and/or prosthetic patient care.
Alley is the creator of the High-Fidelity Interface, the XFrame interface, and the Anatomically Contoured and Controlled Interface (ACCI). According to biodesigns, Alley conceived and helped developed the PushValve and MagValve designs for suction sockets, innovations that are patented by Otto Bock HealthCare, Duderstadt, Germany, and won a Red Dot Design Award in 2009. He also assisted in the development of the BAHA and Sure-Lok devices by TRS, Boulder, Colorado. He is currently working with DEKA Research & Development, Manchester, New Hampshire, on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program. Alley is a clinical columnist, has contributed to five upper-limb textbooks, and received a certificate of appreciation from the Department of the Army.
