Dear Colleagues
I am treating a little eleven month old boy .
The boy was diagnosed as having relatively short achilles tendons
and AFO’s were recommended by his orthopedic surgeon
The orthoses were made at 5 degrees dorsiflexion as requested by the
doctor –
I have not managed to keep his heel and foot down in the orthosis . –
Within about an hour his heel has risen and he is essentially back in a
plantar flexion position
(He has normal tone and enough range to be in the orthosis )
I have tried all types of strapping:
– 45 degree angle at the ankle joint
– Figure eight straps going round the ankle
– A strap coming from medial to lateral but coming through a slot so as
to be even closer to the foot
Any suggestions would be most useful as
I have really run out of possible solutions – A bivalves AFO is not
an option since the child struggles when the orthosis are put on him and
therefore would make donning them properly quite impossible.
Thank You,
Vivian Alexander
