John “Jay” Tew
John “Jay” Tew, CP, practice manager at the Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, patient care facility, will continue his relief efforts for Haiti’s amputee population, which continues to struggle in the wake of the January 12, 2010, earthquake. From February through May 2010, Tew took the helm as lead prosthetist for the Hanger clinic located at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer, Deschapelles, Haiti. The clinic was established in February 2010 through Hanger’s charitable arm, the Ivan R. Sabel Foundation. As the first resident clinician to serve at the clinic, Tew provided prosthetic care to 300 Haitian amputees. To date, nearly 700 patients have received prosthetic care at the facility.
On January 5, 2011, Tew will return to the Hanger clinic and serve as lead practitioner for a six-week rotation.
“The goal was to create a sustainable prosthetic facility in a developing nation,” Tew was quoted as saying about his initial visit in the December 14 The Advocate. “And that’s exactly what we did to a T. It’s really exciting to go back.”
Tew has received the Hanger Excellence Award for Clinical Leadership and the Louisiana Distinguished Civilian Service Award by the Louisiana National Guard for his service to wounded soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
