Researchers at the University of California San Diego are seeking participants for a study of a potential new treatment option for people with phantom limb pain. In collaboration with V.S. Ramachandran, PhD, creator of mirror box therapy, the researchers are conducting a brain imaging–based study on the effects of psilocybin (the active ingredient in so-called “magic mushrooms”) on people experiencing chronic phantom limb pain after amputation.
The study is being led by Fadel Zeidan, PhD, in the Brain Mechanisms of Pain and Health Laboratory. Zeidan is an associate professor of anesthesiology at the university, and cofounder and neuroscience director of the newly formed UC San Diego Psychedelic Health and Research Initiative. His research is focused on determining the active mechanisms that mediate the relationship between self-regulatory practices and health.
